Exploring Colorado: Royal Arch Trail

Royal Arch trail is located in Chautauqua Park in Boulder. It’s a serious workout with a 1400 foot elevation gain, which will log approximately a 3.5 mile round trip total. It’s an out and back trail that can get quite crowded during the mid morning and weekends. I would suggest allotting 2-3 hours for this hike. We brought Banner, our pup, with us and there were a few rocky areas that required climbing over/under which he was a bit hesitant about. There are many rock steps that go up and down before reaching the final ascent. This is a VERY popular trail and can become overcrowded on weekends. I suggest arriving between 7-8 am on the weekends or plan to complete the hike during a weekday to avoid the crowds. The view of the arch and of Boulder below are apt rewards for this strenuous hike! Make sure to bring extra water and snacks to stay hydrated and fueled.
